Friday Sports Recap: Ole Miss & USM Football, Bill McGillis Year In Review

Posted: Updated:
Higher expectations face the Ole Miss Rebels in the football season ahead, but they did not seem to lack any confidence at the podium during the SEC Media Days. After three straight losses a dramatic win over LSU in October of 2013 catapulted Ole Miss to a four-game winning streak, which gives the team motivation heading into 2014.

While every SEC team in the country was invading Hoover, Ala. over the last four days, the Southern Miss football team was busy holding its 31st annual Jackson All-Star Party on Thursday night. Head coach Todd Monken, several players and even Governor Phil Bryant were all there, and were all very excited for USM's outlook in the season to come.

One year ago Friday Bill McGillis addressed the Southern Miss faithful as the school's new athletic director for the first time, and immediately captivated the fan base with his dynamic personality and unwavering commitment to excellence. 365 days later, his impact has been widely felt throughout the athletic community.

He has hired new volleyball, men’s tennis and men’s basketball coaches, and is about to hire a track and field coach.

Men’s basketball won a four-way share of the Conference USA basketball title under McGillis.

Jamierra Faulkner received the Gillom Trophy and was later drafted into the WNBA by the Chicago Sky.

Head women's basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis was named C-USA Coach of the Year.

McGillis oversaw the fourth C-USA Baseball Tournament hosted at Pete Taylor Park, the most of any school in the league.

A few months back Southern Miss entered into a partnership with IMG-Learfield - the privatized leader in ticket sales for intercollegiate athletics - in an attempt to improve season and single-game ticket sales.

McGillis issued a feasibility study on Reed Green Coliseum. Populous, a company that describes itself as "a global collective of architects, designers, technical experts and industry veterans," is slated to present the findings by the end of July. The firm is also preparing a feasibility study on the renovation or possible relocation of the student-athletes' academic center.
