Limestone, TN (WJHL) - Brights Zoo posted on its Facebook page its new baby giraffe died Wednesday night. Zoo officials said the baby born two weeks ago didn't venture out in the afternoon.

By 7pm, he was unresponsive. Forty minutes later, the beautiful animal was dead.

UT's Veterinary Clinic will investigate what caused the giraffe to died.

"For the past two weeks it has been the highlight of everyone's day to see him," Brights Zoo said on Facebook.

Despite the giraffe's death, he'll still be named through a contest that ended at midnight Wednesday.

"Even though he was with us for a very short time we all feel he is still deserving of a name," the Zoo said. "All three giraffe were noticeably upset this evening. We believe they realize what has happened and are just as sad as we are."We hope that everyone keeps our staff and giraffe in their thoughts and prayers as we go though this mourning process. This has been the hardest news for the zoo to share. We truly appreciate the number of people that have followed Valerie's story and felt that we should share the sad news with everyone."
