RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Triangle family says it is "still optimistic" someone will come forward with information that may help police solve a 20-year-old cold case.

Beth Ellen Vinson, who grew up in Goldsboro, was 17 years old when she was found stabbed more than 25 times on Wicker Drive in August 1994.

Police said Vinson was last seen leaving her apartment in the 2400 block of Avent Ferry Road during the early morning hours of Aug. 16, 1994.

About 3 hours later, her car was found abandoned alongside Capital Boulevard just south of the beltline with one of her shoes still in the vehicle, police said. Her body was located between two industrial buildings a short distance from her car.

The investigation has been open since the crime; and despite numerous leads, there have been no arrests in the case and the identity of her killer is still a mystery.

Family members said Thursday they hope someone will come forward with information so they can have closure.

"We are still optimistic that something will come of this," said Beth Ellen Vinson's uncle, Russell Vinson. "I feel that someone out there knows something, and all [police] need is the right bit of information and they can solve this case."

Homicide Detective Jerry Faulk has been on the case for 5 years. He said Raleigh police have followed up on several leads, but to no avail.

"There's no doubt in my mind the case is a solvable case, although it's been 20 years and we have not been able to do that yet," he said. "It is a solvable case."

Faulk said police are reaching out to the public in hopes that someone will have information that could help advance the case.

"The family deserves justice and peace," Faulk said.

If you have any information about the case, you are asked to call Raleigh Crimestoppers at (919) 834-HELP, or visit raleighcrimestoppers.org.
